CLA SITE collaborated with a team of consultants, the City of Rome, and NYS Canal Corporation to transform the City’s Barge Canal waterfront into a new public destination for the City and the surrounding region. This project involved design work at the confluence of two waterways: the National Landmark Barge Canal and the Old Erie Canal. The project features a new public waterfront marina and promenade, a kayak launch, and a renovated Canalway Trail. The challenge of the project and a central highlight was a re-watering the dried up portions of the Old Erie Canal. CLA SITE provided master planning, design development and construction documentation.

The rediscovery of the original Erie Canal connects the urban fabric of Rome’s downtown to the Barge Canal and provides a new recreational feature for the community. Funding and support for conceptual and final design were provided by NYS Department of State and the Rome Downtown Brownfield Opportunity Area.
